Rhetoric into action

Maxima places a great deal of importance on providing a quality service to its clients, reflected by its participation in externally audited quality assurance programs. Maxima has proudly met and maintained the standards required for ISO 9001:2000 accreditation, national accreditation with Group Training Australia and accreditation as a Registered Training Organisation. Maxima's Job Network division for its industry and the entire organisation is geared towards continuously improving the quality of its service.

We take a leading role in the employment and training industries and the wider community. Our CEO is the President of Group Training Australia (South Australia) and we have membership and representation in a wide range of industry organisations such as the National Employment Services Association, Recruitment and Consulting Society of Australia and Jobs Australia. Our commitment to equity is reflected in the fact that we are one of the largest employers of indigenous Australian Apprentices in the state. Maxima operates ongoing employment programs to assist indigenous South Australians, people with disabilities, youth at risk and the long term unemployed.

Maxima also has a strong commitment to providing safe and healthy workplaces for its employees, temporary workers and Australian Apprentices. We utilise leading OHS&W systems, including the employment of a dedicated team of relevantly qualified and experienced OHS&W personnel that assess and monitor occupational health and safety risks within our client's workplaces. Our OHS&W Coordinator is a member of the Labour Hire Industry Occupational Health and Safety Working Party. An audit of 50 labour hire organisations in late 2003 showed Maxima as performing either highest or equal highest on all key performance indicators, reflecting our market leading approach to safety.

Maxima as a 'not-for-profit'

The Maxima Group is a not-for-profit community organisation. This means that its purpose is to provide benefits to the community rather than generate profits.

As with other Group Training Companies, Maxima is operated on commercial lines and many of its divisions aim to generate a surplus. However surplus funds are re-invested in the organisations group training activities to provide maximum benefit to the community.

The Maxima Group is managed at the strategic level by a voluntary board of directors. Day-to-day management responsibility rests with the Chief Executive Officer, who reports directly to the Board.

In the unlikely event that Maxima's operations were ever wound up, its accumulated surplus (equity) would not be distributed to any individual stakeholders. Instead the most likely scenario would be that the organisation's net assets would be transferred to another, like-minded organisation, such as another group training company.

A solid background

The Maxima Group first opened in 1985 although it was originally known as the South Australian Local Government Group Apprenticeship Scheme. SALGGAS was set up to encourage the employment and training of younger people in South Australia's local governments, through an arrangement known as 'group training'.

Group training was first developed in Australia in the 1970's. Organisations called 'group training companies' were set up to act as the direct employer of apprentices and trainees, who were then hired out to employers in an arrangement similar to labour hire. This made the employment of trainees and apprentices simpler, more effective and less risky to 'host' employers since the legal requirements of employment were the responsibility of the group training company. Encouraging the uptake of traineeships and apprenticeships is seen as a key strategy for increasing the skill level of Australia's workforce and reducing unemployment.

The Maxima Group has grown from employing two people in 1985 to more than 150 today. Maxima is a not-for-profit organisation and its core business is still group training. Over the years Maxima has persistently increased the range of services it offers and the range of employers and job seekers that it serves.

In 1991 the organisation created its labour hire division, providing temporary labour hire to local governments. Today this division provides both temporary and permanent blue-collar workers to government, business and not-for-profit organisations and is a significant player in South Australia's labour hire market.

Maxima's Training Services division was formed in 1993 to provide accredited training to the organisation's trainees and apprentices. Initially the focus of this division was training in the horticulture area, although now it provides a wide range of accredited and customised training in fields such as business and management, retail and workplace training.

Following on from these successes the organisation created a separate division to provide recruitment services for employers seeking white-collar staff in 1999. Maxima's office and professional division provides a range of business and government clients with both temporary and permanent staff.

In 1998 when the Federal Government privatised the employment services offered to unemployed people (replacing the C.E.S. with the Job Network), Maxima tendered to provide a share of these services in metropolitan Adelaide. The Maxima Joblink division today is one of the largest Job Network providers in South Australia, operating from five different locations across Adelaide.

The Maxima name was first used as a brand for the organisation's group training services in 1991, with the Maxima Group name being adopted across the entire organisation in 1997.

In 2005 Maxima commenced a process of national expansion, opening offices in both Brisbane and Melbourne and now operates from 10 sites across Australia..

The Maxima Group is understandably proud of its rapid growth and strong contribution to employment and training initiatives for the benefit of all Australians.
