  Job Description
The role of this position is to design, install, administer, and optimize company customer facing servers and related components to achieve high performance of the various off the shelf and custom internally designed applications supported by tuning the servers and managing SQL Server databases as necessary.
This includes ensuring the availability of client/server applications, configuring all new implementations, and developing processes and procedures for ongoing management of the SQL database server environment.
The SQL Server database administrator will also participate in cross-functional duties and projects including areas such as on-call rotations, server builds (linux and non-linux), collocation deployments and other duties as needed.

* Lead, coordinate and participate in key process improvements.
* Participate in design and review of new systems and applications.
* Coordinate with engineering, application, and database administration functions to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of our collocation systems to meet business demands.
* Perform file system configuration and management on both local and NAS/SAN based systems.
* Create shell scripts to meet both engineering and departmental needs when required.
* Monitor and test system performance and provide performance statistics and reports including suggestions for improvements.
* Define and implement strategies for integrating Linux and non-Linux operating environments (AD integration) with SQL databases in a cross platform environment (Linux and Windows)
* Recommend and execute modifications to SQL Server database systems in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.
* Implement policies, procedures, and technologies (including firewalls) to ensure system / database security.
* Work with application development staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures.
* Create models for new database development and/or changes to existing ones.
* Install and configure relevant network components to ensure database access as well as database consistency and integrity.
* Respond to and resolve database access and performance issues.
* Monitor database system details within the database, including stored procedures and execution time, and implement efficiency improvements.
* Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets.
* Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team.
* Recommend and execute modifications to server environment in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.
* Conduct research on server hardware, software, and protocols in support of procurement and development efforts.
* Develop and maintain training materials and server documentation.
* Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team.
* Work on non-linux systems including Windows, Routers, Switches and Load balancers
* Be an owner of a functional area such as Monitoring, ITIL, Project management or other areas

* Advanced knowledge of: SQL Server 2000 and 2005, Redhat Enterprise and Networking
* Advanced knowledge of at least 3 of the following: NT, W2K, Debian, various Linux variants, Exchange, Postgress, IIS, Proxy, Apache, Squid, SendMail or Exim.
* Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining all manners of server hardware and associated network equipment, including SAN/NAS, SCSI, RAID, and I/O topology.
* Experience with server performance tuning and monitoring tools.
* Familiarity with TCP/IP, firewall management, and operating system configuration.
* Working technical knowledge of scripting code using Perl, CGI, C, shell, and scripting tools.
* General knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS, as well as LDAP/NFS
* Project management skills a definite asset.
* Strong understanding of the organization*s goals and objectives.
* Good written and oral communication skills; good interpersonal skills.
* Ability to conduct research into server issues and products as required.
* Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.
* Highly self motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
* Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
* Ability to effectively prioritize tasks in a high-pressure environment.
* Strong customer service orientation.
* Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

Someone from military background strongly preferred

Education and Experience

University degree in the field of computer science or management information systems or a related discipline or equivalent

At least four years equivalent work experience in a SQL Server database administrator*s position responsible for managing SQL Server databases in production environments.
