The role in short is going to suit one of two people:
1)An experienced, hands-off Development Manager who has a glass ceiling hanging over them preventing them advancing to a Head of Dev role
2)A Head of Development looking for a new challenging - which this one most certainly is
This role is awesome, as are the company…..they are leading UK based Ecommerce retailer, based in Central London who circa 1 year ago received £60million to help take their business to the next level. We recently assigned the new CTO - a very well respected guy who has a very firm vision for what he wants to do with the tech function in order to achieve the business objectives. The first two things he has done are 1) get rid of the dead-wood and re-install and strong motivated team spirit within the team and 2) make the decision to redevelop the entire Enterprise architecture and all existing Solutions from the ground up! This is where you step in.
You will be working alongside the CTO and Head of Infrastructure to redevelop all existing software solutions from the ground up. The current solutions will be supported by a third party who will deal with all BAU and Support related matters. This third party relationship is one that you will manage, but not going to take up much of your time. The majority of your time will be spent managing the projects, the team and roadmaps to ensure successful delivery of the new systems.
The new products will be developed using a mix of Java and PHP (PHP front-end, Java back) with the encouragement of OpenSource tech to be used throughout the stack. Although the role is very much a management position, it's expected that the right person will still have an awareness about new/trends in the market. One of the tougher parts to the job is going to be the man-management side of things, and this is something that will be key….we will need to see demonstrable proof of you have built a strong development function (does not have to be massive - up to 10 dev's is suffice) and get them working well for you - motivated, driven to succeed and going the extra mile to complete a project (not because you are making them, but because they are genuinely motivated to do so). Attrition rates will play a part here - until the new CTO arrived the company had a 70% attrition rate - he's got this down to 20% for this year and is confident that he has a stable ship now, but it's certainly something you'll need to keep your eye on.
The role is not going to be a walk in the park - it is however the chance to put your stamp on your career working on pure greenfield projects so it is a very rare opportunity.
