Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and experienced COBOL Mainframe Programmer/Developer to join our team for a 3-month contract with the Georgia Department of Labor. In this role, you will transform business requirements into robust programming solutions, maintain and enhance custom software applications, and provide critical production support. This opportunity allows you to work on high-impact projects while advancing your technical expertise in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate Requirements: Convert analysis, design documents, and specifications into well-structured COBOL programs.
- Software Maintenance & Enhancement: Modify and test user data entry screens, batch processes, reports, queries, and menus to enhance existing applications.
- Code & Process Review: Conduct thorough reviews of current code, data, and business processes to support non-database functions.
- Testing & Validation: Execute test program changes, update test files, run tests, review results, and ensure all modifications meet the requirements.
- Data Error Resolution: Identify and correct data errors through refined application logic and develop detailed data analysis/summary reports using IBM and Microsoft tools.
- Application Conversion: Assist in transitioning COBOL applications to web-based platforms.
- Documentation: Prepare comprehensive program-level and user-level documentation to support the software development lifecycle.
- Performance Enhancement: Optimize software performance to reduce operating time and improve overall efficiency in compliance with organizational guidelines and code management procedures.
Required Experience & Skills
- COBOL & Mainframe Expertise: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in COBOL development and JCL development/maintenance on mainframe systems.
- Technical Proficiency: Proven experience with COBOL, DB2, JCL, and Control-M.
- Full Software Development Life Cycle: In-depth understanding of the entire SDLC including design, development, integration testing, and deployment.
- Troubleshooting & Debugging: Strong ability to troubleshoot, test, and debug software to ensure accurate and efficient outcomes.
- Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical skills for addressing non-database functions, correcting data errors, and generating analysis/summary reports.
- Documentation: Experience preparing detailed documentation for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills to facilitate clear sign-off on changes and ensure alignment with user requirements.
- Process Adherence: Proven capability to follow organizational guidelines for source code management and migration processes.
