Description

You will assist the arboviral surveillance program in monitoring vector-borne disease occurrence in arthropods across Indiana.

This role is on-site.

Responsibilities

• Collect mosquitoes using gravid, light, and resting traps for virus identification.
• Perform tick collection using drag sampling techniques.
• Identify specimens to species level using morphological characteristics and microscopes.
• Prepare tick and mosquito samples for pathogen testing.
• Navigate wooded environments and outdoor field conditions while carrying surveillance equipment.

Required Skills

• Current enrollment in an Indiana college or university.
• Ability to perform basic laboratory skills, including specimen identification via microscope.
• Ability to work independently in the field.
• Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for state business travel.
• Physical ability to walk long distances and carry up to 25 lbs.
• Availability to work for at least a 12-week period between May 13, 2024, and August 2, 2024.
• Comfort working in outdoor summer conditions, including heat and inclement weather.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with IDOH surveillance protocols.
