Job Summary
The Estimating Manager is responsible to lead the Northern estimating team and overall operations while supporting Southern estimating needs from document management, metrics, and bid support and overflow.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Control master bid log and all information related to incoming project bid opportunities.
- Manage weekly estimating meeting to present all current bid opportunities to the sales team in real time.
- Review incoming opportunities and decide on intent to bid using predefined customer/project scoring and team discussions.
- Ensure timely customer notification to bid requests along with our intent to bid in all product lines.
- Assign each bid opportunity to an estimator based on project type/product line and degree of difficulty.
- Present value engineering options in all cases possible to spotlight premium costs that can take us out of contention.
- Review all bids & proposals before submittal to customer to ensure completeness, accuracy, and ease of customer analysis.
- Execute and/or assign post bid follow-up responsibility to each project and demand tangible results.
- Maintain and analyze bidding trends, i.e. # of bidders, win/lose %, and other key metrics.
- Track, analyze, and publish tangible bid metrics to assist with overall strategy (# of bids, success rates, etc.)
- Constant communication with General Manager and Sales / Business Development team to discuss all opportunities in real time.
- Book won projects immediately upon award using rough budgets and reasonable start time and duration.
- Hand-off ownership for won projects to operations department after initial booking.
- Develop strong relationships with key vendors to ensure the best pricing, support, and data on market conditions.
- Maintain and publish drywall & acoustical labor tracking guides for all key labor productions and general condition items.
- Periodic jobsite visits to see our hard work in action and to remain relevant with jobsite conditions.
- Develop relationships with key customer preconstruction contacts to assist with bid day communication and results.
- Named the main point of contact for all estimating related calls, support, and vendor visits.
- Manage all estimating hardware/software, i.e. plotters, paper, supplies, and IT related support needs.
- Support southern office with overall estimating, document, and metric management.
- Support other administrative functions and information tracking systems as necessary.
- Maintain estimator responsibilities on large and complex projects based on availability from management duties.
- Manage Northern estimating team and operations with several key duties as follows:
- Responsible for team unification, execution to set goals, and alignment with the overall company mission and values.
- Manage time, attendance, and PTO for the staff using ADP system
- Manage hourly employees to a 40-hour week while covering the overall needs of the department.
- Execute yearly reviews for team to provide candid feedback on performance and set future goals/expectations
- Maintain staff synergy with bi-weekly “one on one” discussions to maintain open and candid communication on their satisfaction versus contribution to the Team.
Education/Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Construction Management, Engineering, and/or similar level of construction experience
- Minimum of 10 years of estimating experience in framing/drywall, acoustical ceilings, and operable partition applications.
- High attention to detail and problem-solving skills with speed in day to day work.
- The ability to read and understand construction documents.
- Proficient computer skills and experience in the On Center (OST/Qbid) estimating software.
- The ability to lead a team towards predefined goals while living the mission and values of the company.
