Description

Own the end-to-end data architecture for petabyte-scale, multi-region OLTP systems using Google Spanner and Alloy DB. Define logical canonical models and design native physical schemas to ensure high availability, low latency, and high performance.

Responsibilities

• Design Spanner-native physical schemas, including primary key strategies, row key distribution to avoid hotspots, interleaving decisions, and secondary index strategies.
• Define transaction boundaries under Spanner constraints, balancing single-partition versus multi-partition transactions, atomicity, and consistency trade-offs.
• Classify workloads by consistency tolerance, defining idempotency and retry-safe patterns for strong consistency versus bounded staleness.
• Participate in workload replay analysis to diagnose hot key risks, transaction conflicts, and index amplification; size instances and estimate cost envelopes.
• Act as final authority for Spanner data design decisions, mentoring domain architects and providing executive-level architectural rationale.

Required Skills

• 10+ years in large-scale data architecture and modeling.
• Deep expertise in Google Spanner internals, including TrueTime, distributed transactions, and synchronous replication.
• Experience designing petabyte-scale, multi-region OLTP systems with a focus on high availability and low latency.
• Strong understanding of distributed consistency models and failure modes in globally distributed databases.
• Proficiency in defining Logical Canonical Data Models (LCDM) independent of physical storage.
• Ability to validate CRUD contracts, query semantics, and transaction invariants with QA and platform teams.
• Experience with schema compatibility scorecards and migration readiness sign-offs.

Preferred Skills

• Prior Oracle to distributed database migration experience.
• Experience with Alloy DB.
