Core Responsibilities

• Own automation strategy, test planning, framework implementation, and automated test execution within an Agile squad.
• Design, develop, and maintain reusable automation framework components.
• Develop automation using Java, Python, and/or JavaScript depending on the testing layer and framework.
• Build and maintain Web UI automation, particularly with WebdriverIO, Selenium, Katalon, or comparable technologies.
• Develop robust API/service automation using Postman, ReadyAPI, or code-based API frameworks.
• Validate complex database and data modernization initiatives involving Snowflake, DB2, SQL, ETL, and data extracts.
• Perform:
  • Source-to-target validation
  • ETL count reconciliation
  • Field-to-field mapping validation
  • Data-quality validation
  • Transformation-rule verification
  • Exception/reject validation
• Integrate automated testing into Git/Jenkins CI/CD pipelines.
• Develop scalable Page Object Model and data-driven automation frameworks.
• Utilize AI-assisted QA capabilities such as:
  • Self-healing UI locators
  • Automated failure/root-cause analysis
  • AI-based visual validation
  • Conversational/chatbot-driven test execution
  • AI-assisted reusable framework development
• Write comprehensive functional, regression, integration, API, UI, and data-validation tests.
• Investigate complex failures and determine whether the cause resides in the application, automation framework, data, environment, or upstream/downstream services.
• Participate actively in requirements refinement and identify quality risks before development is complete.
• Work collaboratively with developers, architects, product owners, business analysts, and other QA engineers.
• Drive continuous improvement rather than simply executing predefined test cases.

Candidate Calibration

I would not treat every technology in the original Must-Have section equally. Doing so will eliminate otherwise excellent SDETs because the list represents several different testing ecosystems.

Tier 1 — True Must-Haves

Candidates should demonstrate substantive experience in these areas:

1. Advanced test automation / SDET experience
2. Strong programming capability in at least one major language—Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Python—with credible exposure to the others
3. Automation framework design, not merely script execution
4. API automation/testing
5. SQL and database validation
6. ETL/data extract/data reconciliation testing
7. Snowflake data testing
8. CI/CD integration
9. Git
10. Agile quality engineering
11. Ability to independently diagnose failures and solve problems
12. Strong technical communication
