Description

We are seeking a Senior Java Engineer/Architect to join our team supporting and modernizing the Vision platform — a critical legacy system at the heart of our fund management operations. Vision is a complex, Legacy platform written in proprietary language similar to Java/J2EE m Unix  with deep Object-Oriented and Smalltalk roots. This is not a routine maintenance role.

Mandatory Skills-

·                Java /J2EE – Strong, production-grade command of Java (8+), J2EE architecture , and related enterprise patterns. Ability to read, debug, and extend mature codebases.

·                OOP & Design - Deep understanding of Object-Oriented principles — encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, SOLID principles, and design patterns (GoF). Ability to reason about complex class hierarchies.

·                Legacy Fluency - Comfort navigating underdocumented legacy systems. Ability to reverse-engineer behaviour through code reading, profiling, and test-driven exploration rather than relying on spec docs . Ability to use AI tools to reverse engineer legacy code

·                 AI Engineering Tools - Good knowledge of AI tools like GitHub Copilot or equivalent , LLMs , MCP servers 

·                Architecture - Hands-on experience with monolith-to-services decomposition, REST API design, and cloud-ready patterns (AWS or equivalent). Familiar with containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).

·                Smalltalk /Unix - Working knowledge of Smalltalk — particularly in a J2EE-adjacent context — is a significant advantage. Familiarity with Smalltalk's message-passing model and reflective programming style

·                CI/CD & Tools : Proficiency with Git, Maven/Gradle, Jenkins or equivalent pipelines. Experience with SonarQube or similar code quality tools is a plus.

·                Understanding of databases and data models

·                Cross-Functional Comm. : Equally comfortable in engineering deep-dives and business-facing discussions. Adapts communication style to the audience — from developers to managers

·                Intellectual Curiosity : Genuinely interested in understanding how legacy systems work, why they were built the way they were, and what the better path forward looks like  . Able to decompose ambiguous problems, form a hypothesis, design a quick experiment (MVP), and iterate. Strong written and verbal articulation of findings .

·                Ownership & Accountability : Takes end-to-end accountability for assigned workstreams. Proactively flags risks early and proposes mitigations rather than surfacing problems too late
