Job Description
We are seeking a Senior JavaScript Engineer with deep expertise in UI architecture, design systems, and frontend performance to help build, govern, and scale an enterprise-wide design system.
In this role, you will partner directly with a US-based global non-profit association headquartered in the Greater Chicago Area. The organization is the leading global authority on building safety codes, technical standards, accreditation, professional certification, and digital compliance platforms.
You will work within a distributed team across LATAM and US time zones to engineer highly accessible, performance-driven web interfaces. These digital solutions support millions of architects, engineers, municipal code officials, safety inspectors, and building professionals worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
Design System Architecture & Engineering
Build & Maintain UI Libraries: Engineer, govern, and evolve a unified enterprise design system powering digital code platforms, learning management systems, mobile/hybrid interfaces, and compliance/accreditation portals.
Technical Ownership: Drive front-end strategy, component architecture, tooling, and governance to ensure consistency across multiple public and internal web applications.
Accessibility & Performance First: Enforce strict adherence to WCAG 2.2 AA standards, semantic HTML, ARIA patterns, keyboard navigation, and Core Web Vitals optimization.
Client Engagement & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Direct US Stakeholder Sync: Collaborate in real-time with Chicago-based Product Managers, UX Designers, and Technical Architects to align business goals with frontend capabilities.
Design-to-Code Alignment: Translate complex technical workflows—such as interactive building code search engines, digital references, and certification portals—into reusable UI components.
Governance & Tooling: Manage semantic versioning of UI packages, write clear technical documentation, handle breaking changes, and automate UI testing pipelines.
Mentorship & Engineering Excellence
Mentor mid-level engineers on modern JavaScript/TypeScript patterns, testing methodologies, and web component design.
Establish front-end continuous delivery workflows in collaboration with DevOps teams.
Technical Requirements
Core JavaScript & Web Fundamentals: 5+ years of software engineering experience with native JavaScript, TypeScript, Web Components, and semantic HTML5.
Modern Frameworks: Deep experience with React (Hooks, Context, State Management, SSR/Next.js) and evaluation of modern UI libraries.
CSS & Design Systems: Mastery of advanced CSS3 (CSS Modules, Styled Components, Tailwind CSS, Sass, CSS Custom Properties) and design token architectures.
Accessibility Expertise: Hands-on experience implementing WCAG 2.2 AA standards, screen reader testing (NVDA/JAWS/VoiceOver), focus management, and keyboard-first design.
Testing & Documentation: Experience with Storybook, Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, and visual regression tools.
Build Tools & DevOps: Hands-on experience with bundlers (Vite/Webpack), Git, and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions / GitLab CI).
Ionic Framework (Nice-to-Have / Bonus): Experience building cross-platform web/mobile components or hybrid apps using Ionic (with React or Web Components).
Any Graduate
