Key Responsibilities
L3 Production Support & Escalation
- Act as the final escalation point (L3) for critical incidents related to Sybase ASE and Sybase IQ.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and provide permanent corrective actions for recurring issues.
- Provide on‑call and weekend support for high‑severity production incidents and major activities.
- Ensure SLA adherence and proactive risk identification.
Sybase ASE (OLTP) Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and upgrade Sybase ASE instances.
- Manage:
- Backup and recovery strategies
- HA/DR (warm standby, Replication Server)
- Security, roles, and auditing
- Perform advanced performance tuning:
- Query and stored procedure optimization
- Cache, memory, tempdb, and I/O tuning
- Blocking and deadlock analysis
- Support application deployments and production releases.
Sybase IQ (Analytics / DW) Responsibilities
- Administer and support Sybase IQ data warehouse environments.
- Design and optimize:
- Index strategies (HG, LF, bitmap)
- Data load and ETL processes
- Manage large‑scale data volumes and disk layout.
- Tune complex analytical queries and reporting workloads.
- Plan and execute IQ upgrades, patching, and migrations.
Change, Upgrade & DR Management
- Lead major changes including:
- Version upgrades and patching
- Platform and storage migrations
- DR drills, failover and failback
- Review and approve change plans and rollback strategies.
- Perform post‑implementation validation and reporting.
Automation, Documentation & Best Practices
- Develop scripts for monitoring, maintenance, and health checks.
- Create and maintain SOPs, runbooks, and operational documentation.
- Drive standardization and continuous improvement across environments.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor and guide L1/L2 DBAs; provide technical reviews and knowledge transfer.
- Act as Sybase SME during client calls, audits, and architecture discussions.
- Coordinate with application, infrastructure, storage, and vendor (SAP) teams.
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Skills
- 8–12+ years of experience as a Sybase DBA
- Strong expertise in:
- Sybase ASE architecture and administration
- Sybase IQ administration and performance tuning
- Backup, recovery, and DR strategies
- Replication Server
- Strong SQL and Unix/Linux shell scripting skills
Nice to Have
- SAP Sybase ASE / IQ certifications
- Experience supporting SAP applications on Sybase
- Exposure to cloud or hybrid environments
- ITIL process knowledge
