Must-Have Skills

1. Software Development Foundation

The candidate must have a computer science or software development background and at least three years of experience. A computer science degree is preferred, but the intake does not identify it as an absolute requirement.

Resume evidence to seek:

• Software engineer or software developer titles
• Ownership of production applications
• Backend or full-stack development with meaningful backend depth
• Product launches, releases, or customer-facing delivery
• Clear coding and design responsibilities

2. Java

Java is the specifically identified programming requirement.

Strong evidence:

• Multiple years of recent Java development
• Java-based backend services or applications
• Building, enhancing, or supporting production Java systems
• Framework experience connected to actual software delivery
• Demonstrated coding ownership rather than only familiarity

Potential concern:

• Java appears only in a skills list without supporting project details
• Java experience is academic, dated, or limited to test automation
• The candidate has recent experience exclusively in another language

3. System Design

The candidate must be able to design systems using strong design principles, with AWS-like environments cited as an example in the intake.

Resume or screening evidence:

• Designed backend services or service components
• Made architecture or API design decisions
• Addressed scalability, reliability, availability, or maintainability
• Worked with distributed systems
• Created technical design documents
• Participated meaningfully in design reviews
• Evaluated tradeoffs rather than simply implementing another engineer’s design

Preferred Qualifications

Ranked in the intake:

1. Development experience using AI
2. Leadership experience mentoring junior SDEs
3. Previous Amazon employment
