· Conduct a full assessment of the current database environment using tools such as Redgate, SQL Profiler, and DMVs to identify performance bottlenecks.
· Develop and execute an optimization plan to reduce query latency, timeouts, and blocks under peak load.
· Evaluate the feasibility and design of a clustered or multi-instance SQL Server setup to provide increased computing power, scalability, and failover redundancy.
· Deliver measurable improvements in CPU utilization, query execution times, and database responsiveness.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Analyze and optimize stored procedures, indexes, and table structures for performance and maintainability.
· Review and refactor existing stored procedure logic involving temp tables, loops, joins, grouping, and dynamic SQL.
· Recommend and implement indexing strategies, partitioning, and data archival policies.
· Assess configuration settings such as MAXDOP, cost threshold for parallelism, TempDB, and connection pooling parameters.
· Suggest hardware and VM configuration improvements to support current and future workloads.
· Ensure modern standards of data security and encryption at rest are applied.
· Provide documentation of all findings, recommendations, and implemented changes.
· Collaborate with the Director of IT to ensure a seamless optimization process.
Skillset/Qualifications:
· Expert-level knowledge of SQL Server performance tuning, including wait stats analysis, execution plans, and deadlock detection.
· Strong background with indexing strategies, query plan optimization, and partitioning large datasets.
· Experience with SQL Server clustering, AlwaysOn Availability Groups, or multi-instance configurations.
· Skilled with Redgate, SQL Profiler, LoadUI, or similar monitoring and stress-testing tools.
· Microsoft Certified (passed at least three 70-XXX database-related exams).
· Familiarity with Windows Server administration, including CPU and memory tuning, user roles, and security settings.
· Excellent communication skills and the ability to present findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Success Metrics:
· Documented reduction in query execution times and system timeouts.
· Improved server CPU and memory utilization.
· Stable performance under simulated load testing.
· Scalable architecture recommendations (e.g., clustering or multi-instance setup)
